Dahlia 'Timothy Hammett' - This fast growing shrubby perennial grows 5 to 6 feet tall. The lavender dahlia flowers with a yellow center can appear from early spring to late fall with peak in fall. Plant in sun or shade and water regularly. It is hardy to about 20-25 degrees F but foliage and flowers will freeze back by frost. This plant came to us from New Zealand plant breeder Keith Hammett who named this plant for his son. We grew this attractive and vigorous plant in 2006 and 2007 but have since discontinued producing it because it was too difficult for us to maintain in a presentable form as a container plant. Our garden plant was also severly damaged in the 2-week January 2007 cold spell when we had 12 nights below freezing and a couple nights that dropped to 25° F. This plant was killed to the ground but reprouted, though it did not bloom at all that year.

This information about Dahlia 'Timothy Hammett' displayed is based on research conducted in our horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also will relate observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments that we receive from others and we welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share any cultural information that would aid others in growing it.
