Echinacea purpurea 'Doppelganger' (Double Purple Coneflower) - Deciduous perennial to 30 inches tall with dark rosy-pink flowers to 5 inches across with orange-yellow disks slightly elongated into an orange-brown cone. From the top of the cone emerge small petals, perched to create a layered effect. These petals distinguish this cultivar and gives it the name "Doppelganger", referring to the shadow self. This curious flower, looking like a tutu is more evident once the plant has been established and is in the second year of growth. As with other cornflowers, this plant makes an outstanding cut flower and a great addition to the mixed border. Plant in full sun to light shade with average garden watering. Very frost hardy (to USDA zone 3). The species is native to the prairies of the central U.S. Introduced by Alice Doyle of Log House Plants in Oregon who found this plant growing in Germany.
This information about Echinacea purpurea 'Doppelganger' displayed is based on research conducted in our horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also will relate observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments that we receive from others and we welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share any cultural information that would aid others in growing it.
