Echinacea Summer Sky™ ['Katie Saul'] PP18,783 (Summer Sky Coneflower) - This Coneflower, hailed as the first bicolor conflower, is a vigorous upright grower forming a clump of foliage to 12-18 inches tall and wide with lanceolate leaves with dentate margins. It is a prolific bloomer, with stout stems rising above foliage to 3 feet tall bearing 5 inch wide sweetly-fragrant flowers that are light peachy-orange with a rose-colored halo and a 1" wide by 3/4 inch tall dark orange cone. This plant flowers over a long period from the spring through the summer with stems that hold up well for fresh cut for bouquets. Plant in full to part sun. Once established this plant is fairly drought tolerant but does best if given irrigation occasionally to regularly. Hardy to USDA zone 4. Echinacea 'Katie Saul' is another of the Big Sky Series of Coneflowers introduced by Itsaul Plants in Atlanta, Georgia. As with other coneflowers in the series this is the result of crossing Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea paradoxa though this plant is the result of backcrossing two such hybrids. It originated from an open pollination in July, 2002 of two Echinacea purpurea × Echinacea paradoxa hybrids in a controlled environments at Dahlonega, Georgia and was selected from the resulting seedlings the following year. Echinacea purpurea is a typically purple-flowering wildflower native to the eastern United States and Echinacea paradoxa, the Ozark Coneflower, is a fragrant yellow-flowering plant from Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. This hybrid inherits fuller, toothed leaves and wider flower petals from Echinacea purpurea and flower color and fragrance from Echinacea paradoxa. Echinacea 'Katie Saul' was selected for upright and columnar plant habit, vigorous growth habit, freely branching habit, large single inflorescences with salmon-pink colored ray florets, strong flowering stems that hold the inflorescences upright. The genus Echinacea is named from the Greek word 'echinos' for "hedgehog" referring to the flower's spiky central cone. Photo courtesy of Itsaul Plants.
