Justicia aurea (Yellow Jacobinia) - This is a large evergreen shrub to 8-12 feet tall by nearly as wide with large, to 12-15 inches long, green lanceolate leaves. The 2 inch long tubular yellow flowers form on 1 foot tall spikes that radiate from the ends of the branches much of the year - particularly abundant from late summer to early winter. Pinch older flowers to encourage continual flowering. Plant in light shade to full sun (along coast) and give regular irrigation. Is an evergreen shrub in frost-free gardens. It is hardy to about 30 degrees F. Prune back to one third of its height in early spring to keep plant tidy.
This information about Justicia aurea displayed is based on research conducted in our horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also will relate observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments that we receive from others and we welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share any cultural information that would aid others in growing it.
