Agave 'Chunky Monkey' - A medium sized solitary plant with broad stout 3 foot long gray leaves that radiate straight up and out with a strong keeled lower surface and well-spaced brown teeth along the margins and a stout brown terminal spine. A sister seedling to this plant flowered and it has a towering inflorescence branching at about 15 feet with the horizontal branches holding rose colored buds that opened to bright yellow flowers. Plant in full sun and irrigate only occasionally. Likely cold hardy to around 15 degrees F. As will all agave it is best to use extreme care when working around or trimming this plant. Not only are the spines wicked and cause a painful swelling if one is poked, but the sap of many species is caustic. This plant was given to us in 2011 by Brian Kemble of the Ruth Bancroft Garden. It was grown from seed that formed on Agave parassana and was presumed to be a cross between this species and Agave salmiana. When Brian described the plant he called it a "Chunky Monkey" and this name just stuck!
