Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata' (Variegated Shell Ginger) - This tropical evergreen perennial for a partially shaded area does best when given ample water during the warm months. White, shell-like flowers emerge from each branch tip in summer. This is a slow to moderate grower which can reach 6 to 8 feet in several years. Cold hardy to 15-20 degrees F. This cultivar has a yellow-striped variegation on the 2 foot long and 5 inch wide leaves. Other growth habits and requirements are the same as species. This plant has become more plentiful in the nursery trade due to the availability of tissue culture plants - our plants are propagated by division.
