Pelargonium 'Violetty' - A semi-prostrate perennial or subshrub to 1 foot tall by 16 inches wide with silvery-gray, hairy foliage and abundant small, butterfly-shaped red and pale pink white flowers in spring to early summer. Plant in full sun to light shade in a well-drained soil and irrigate regularly to occasionally. Hardiness not documented but should handle light frost. This plant was selected from a planned breeding program by Stephen Page in Hillegom, The Netherlands, in April of 2005. It was the result of crossing a Pelargonium ovale variety with Pelargonium 'Splendide' (P.tricolor x P.ovale). The purpose of the breeding program was to develop color breaks in the 'Splendide' variety. 'Violetty' has a similar flower color and flower size to P.ovale, its female parent, but differs in growth habit. It has a similar growth habit, flower form and foliage shape to 'Splendide', its male parent, but differs in flower size. 'Violetty' has smaller foliage that is more grayish-green in color than 'Splendide' and has a soft pink flower color on its lower petals, where it is white on 'Splendide' and 'Violetty' is more prostrate with longer trailing or hanging branches than 'Splendide'. This plant is sometimes listed as Pelargonium violareum 'Violetty' but since it is of hybrid origin, the correct name should just be Pelargonium 'Violetty'. Also Pelargonium violareum is actually a synonym for Pelargonium tricolor. The seed parent Pelargonium ovale has a fairly extensive distribution range within South Africa from the Swartberg and eastwards to Humansdorp where it grows in mountainous and coastal fynbos habitats. The pollen parent is a hybrid between P. ovale and Pelargonium tricolor, a species native to rocky hillsides the Cape Province of southwest South Africa. This plant received US Plant Patent 22,610 on March 27, 2012. Our plants first came to us for trial in March 2011 from Hishtil Nurseries in Israel - image courtesy of Hishtil Nurseries. We had a trial crop of this plant for 2012 but no longer have it in the nursery.
