Polystichum munitum (California Sword Fern) - Native to California's coastal region from Santa Barbara north to Alaska with disjunct populations on islands off Baja California and in North Dakota. This fern forms clumps from which arise many erect pinnately-compound fronds to 2 to 3 feet long (to 4 feet in the Pacific Northwest) .In full shade this fern will form open clumps with fronds spreading outward from the center. In a sunnier location this fern grows more upright with shorter fronds. The shiny leathery leaflets are slightly toothed. It does its best in full shade here in southern California and once established it only needs a little summer water. It is one of the hardiest of ferns and will take temperatures far below 0 degrees F. Naturalized in Europe. We grew this plant from 1979 until 2009.
