Bauhinia corymbosa planted in San Marcos Growers garden |
|
Bauhinia corymbosa or Phanera as it is commonly known is a
beautiful vine with attractive and unusual foliage comes from comes from S.E. Asia. Its small orchid-like flowers and unique 2 lobed leaves
hints at its placement within the subfamily Caesalpiniodae of the Pea family (Fabaceae).
The light lavender flowers with dark veining are abundant from spring thorough fall and are
complimented by the purple tinged new growth. Bauhinia corymbosa is an evergreen vine that can be semi-deciduous for us in southern California, with older leaves
dropping in cold winters. Plant in full sun to part shade. Hardy to at least 20° F and will survive short duration temperatures into the teens.
Fairly drought resistant but looks more luxuriant with occasional irrigation. This fine texture vine with
beautiful flowers is a good trellis subject or allow it to grow through other coarser foliaged plants.
