Agave 'Blue Bola Select' - An attractive midsized agave to 2-3 feet tall with a symmetrical rosette of18 inch long pale gray leaves that are wider toward the middle with large, dark, evenly-spaced spines along the margin and a long terminal spine. Plant in full sun. Irrigate occasionally to infrequently. Hardy to at least 25 F. This Agave is a bit of a mystery for us. This plant was selected in 2004 from a block of plants labeled 'Blue Bola' at Rancho Soledad Nursery in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. It was distinctly different from the other plants in the block and we were immediately taken by its clean look. Rancho Soledad Nursery horticulturist Kelly Griffin speculates that it may be hybrid of Agave celsii.
The information about Agave 'Blue Bola Select' that is displayed on this web page is based on research conducted in our nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We will also include observations made about this plant as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens that we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We also incorporate comments that we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they share cultural information that aids others growing this plant.
Please note that after 46 years in business, San Marcos Growers will be discontinuing nursery operations by the end of 2025 and the property will be developed for affordable housing.
