Joe Solomone Hybrids in the San Marcos Growers gardens

The late Joe Solomone (July 5,1923 - May 30,2008) was involved in the California nursery industry for many years. Some may have known Joe from the Saratoga Horticultural Foundation or as the owner of S&S nursery, the predecessor to Monterey Bay Nursery. Those in the Clivia world know Joe Solomone for his Yellow Clivia. He had been working for over 30 years on Clivia and the fruits of this effort are bountiful.

When Harold Koopowitz gave his talk at the Second Clivia Symposium he showed numerous pictures of greenhouses full of Joe's hybrid Clivia. Joe had some fantastic plants on display during the symposium including the tall flowering and very beautiful yellow Clivia shown above. He also had on display a super nice red flowered Variegated Clivia. Another twist was one of Joe Solomone's yellow clivia that had been dried out and then immersed in a dye solution so that it took up the color into the flowers, making it a bicolor. Was this what Dave Conway meant by a Parti Selection?

More of Joe's hybrids can be seen on the Montery Bay Nursery Website
