This beautiful Coral Tree from South Africa forms a small 15-20 ft. tall tree. It is deciduous from winter well into spring but blooms in late summer and fall, a completely different time of year than other coral trees. The red tubular flowers, spaced along 8-10 inch spikes rise well above the foliage and are very showy against the dark green trifoliate leaves. Hardy to frosts to the mid 20's° F and can freeze to hard wood or even the ground then rebound to bloom the following season. Plant in a warm sunny spot. Though we appreciate this tree when we see it flowering well and it blooms at a different time of year than other coral trees, it tends to get powdery mildew in our coastal area, particularly in nursery conditions, and we have discontinued growing it.
