Bambusa dolichomerithalla 'Green Stripe' (Green Stripe Blowgun Bamboo) - An attractive upright medium-sized clumping bamboo that can grow to about 30 feet tall with 1 1/2- to 2-inch-wide culms. These culms emerge light green with pale dark green longitudinal lines that mature to yellow-green culms with dark green lines.
Plant in full sun and water regularly. This plant is listed by the American Bamboo Society as requiring full sun and being hardy only to 25 F. but we also note that Bamboo Sorcery, the Santa Rosa California Bamboo nursery founded by the legendary Gerald Bol, lists the plant as growing in part sun and tolerating temperatures as low as 16°F.
This species was introduced into the US in 1980 from Taiwan where it is used in craftwork and with its long straight culms with 2 feet between internodes was a favorite for making blowguns. The name for the genus comes from the Dutch word 'bamboes' or 'bamboo' that was a modification of Malay word 'bambu' and the specific epithet seems to be from the Greek words 'dolicho' meaning "abnormally long" or "narrow" and 'thallus' meaning "stem" or "shoot" with the connecting word 'meridies' meaning middle. We grew this plant that we got from Abe Nursery in Carpinteria from 2008 until 2015.
The information about Bambusa dolichomerithalla 'Green Stripe' that is displayed on this web page is based on research conducted in our nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We will also include observations made about this plant as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens that we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We also incorporate comments that we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they share cultural information that aids others growing this plant.
Please note that after 46 years in business, San Marcos Growers will be discontinuing nursery operations by the end of 2025 and the property will be developed for affordable housing.
