Aloe pretoriensis - A solitary rosette-forming succulent that rises slowly on a trunk to as tall as 3 feet, topped with an 18 inch to 3 feet wide head of light bluish-green leaves. In late fall into winter the single branching inflorescence reaches to 6 feet and rises above the leaves with conical racemes of bright red flowers. The leaf tips often turn reddish brown in fall to match the flowers. Enjoys full sun and a frost free environment with occasional summer irrigation. Grows in exposed rocky outcrops in grasslands. The specific epithet means from Pretoria but this plant has a wider range from northern Gauteng, the Northern Province of South Africa, Mpumalanga, Zimbabwe and Swaziland.
