Aloe 'Chico Banana' - A small suckering aloe to 12 to 18 inches tall with rosettes of upright deep green leaves generously decorated with white dashes and seemingly year-round production of clear yellow flowers held a foot above the foliage on unbranched inflorescences.

Plant in full sun in a well-drained soil and give occasional irrigation. Hardy to 20-25° F.

This plant is a hybrid that was created by aloe hybridizer Kelly Griffin when he was working at Rancho Soledad Nursery. It is the result of crossing the Ethiopian Aloe harlana as the seed parent with the pollen parent Aloe peckii, a small aloe that comes from the Al Madu Mountain Range in Northern Somalia.

Aloe 'Chico Banana' came to us from Aloe hybridizer and enthusiast Brent Wigand with a cultivar name he had given it that used the proprietary and universally recognized trademarked name 'Chiquita ® Banana', so we have renamed it 'Chico Banana' so not to infringe on a trademarked name. We also grow another somewhat similar aloe called Aloe 'Verity Nice' that also involves Aloe peckii.

The information about Aloe 'Chico Banana' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant.
