Agave seemanniana - A variable species of Agave that ranges from Chiapas, Mexico south to Costa Rica. It is a solitary, non-suckering plant with a medium-sized rosette of fairly soft pale green broad leaves that lie out flat. The leaves are 1 to 1 1/2 foot long and at least 1/3 to 1/2 as wide as long at their widest and narrow at the leaf base with small soft spines along the margins. Plant in full sun to light shade and irrigate occasionally to regularly. Agave seemmaniana is in the group Hiemiflorae with Agave potatorum, to which it is very similar though A. seemmaniana always has a pronounced narrowing of the leaf base and is generally greener. While this is a more tropical species it is noted to tolerate both drier conditions and an occasional light freeze - some note it hardy to 20° but likely it will depend on from where this wide ranging plant was collected.

The information about Agave seemanniana displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant.
