Ajuga reptans 'Jungle Beauty' (Jungle Beauty Carpet Bugle) - Evergreen groundcover that stays under 6" tall foot tall by up to 2 to 3 feet wide. This cultivar of the common European Carpet Bugle (Ajuga reptans) is noted for its large purple tinged leaves with red margins and 10 inch tall spikes of blue-violet flowers. Plant in sun (coastal) to light shade. Moderate watering needs. Tolerates most soils so long as they are not water-logged. Hardy to < 0 °F. May be the same as 'Jungle Beauty Improved'. We grew this plant for many years (since 1995) as 'Catlin's Giant', determined it is not what is currently being grown under this name by most nurseries and switched to growing the commonly accepted form of 'Catlin's Giant' that had smaller more bronze leaves. Since 2004 we have grown this larger green leafed plant as 'Jungle Beauty' but discontued growing it in 2008.
The information about Ajuga reptans 'Jungle Beauty' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
