Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'George Davidson' (Yellow Montbretia) - The pleated strap-like leaves produced by this South African deciduous corm are held erect to 3 feet tall. Sprays of 3 inch wide yellow-orange flowers have a slightly darker exterior. The flowers rise above the foliage and open in mid summer - among the first of the Crocosmia to bloom. Plant in full sun along the coast and part shade inland. Once established, it does not need irrigation. Cold hardy to -10°F. [(C. crocosmiiflora x C. 'Gerbe d' Or') x C. 'Gerbe d' Or'] One of George Davidson's many hybrids. It received the award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1902. George Davidson was head gardener at Westwick Hal of Norfolk. He used Victor Lemoine's hybrids (see C. Sofatare) but bred his plants for hardiness and larger flowers. The larger flowering hybirds until this time were typically less hardy plants as they relied on the tender Crocosmia aurea for this trait.
