Campanula portenschlagiana (Dalmatian Bellflower) - Evergreen groundcover that forms a low dense mat 2 to 3 inches tall and spreading slowly to 2 feet or more with small rounded leaves. Flowers profusely with blue funnel-shaped flowers held low to the folage in the summer. Plant in cool full sun (coast gardens) to part sun with regular irrigation. Hardy to 5 degrees F. This plant comes from Dalmatian Mountains in Croatia into Hercegovina. Its specific epithet honors Austrian naturalist Franz von Portenschlag-Leydermayer (1772-1822). It has been known as Campanula muralis and commonly called Adria Bellflower of Wall Bellflower, since it is often seen growing on walls. This species was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit in 1993. We have grown this great groundcover since first getting it from Dayka Nursery in 1981.
This information about Campanula portenschlagiana displayed is based on research conducted in our horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also will relate observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments that we receive from others and we welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share any cultural information that would aid others in growing it.
