It has 1 inch long, needlelike light green leaves and grey furrowed bark that peels in strips. Pale cream flowers appear in late spring through summer. It is extremely tough, being both drought tolerant and tolerant of frost, although new tip growth may be damaged. It also can handle harsh sea winds. It is hardy to about 20 degrees F.
