Phormium 'Platt's Black' (New Zealand Flax) - New Zealand Flax cultivar that has spreading and arching nearly black leaves that reach slowly upwards to 3 or 4 feet tall. Plant in full sun to light shade. Can tolerate fairly dry conditions (coastal) but looks best with occasional to regular irrigation. Hardy to 15-20 F. Possibly root hardy below these temperatures but with severe foliage damage unless protected. When we first saw this plant it was darkest of all the New Zealand Flax but it might be better in cooler climates as it seems to languish in southern California and with age losses its dark coloration. Older plants are a dark bronze color with new flushes of darker foliage. We have discontinued growing this plant in favor of the newer selection 'Black Adder'. Phormium 'Platt's Black' was selected by Mr. Graeme Platt of Platt's Nursery in Auckland from seed collected from Phormium 'Black Knight'.
