Dianella caerulea 'Casitas Springs' (Paroo Lily) - An evergreen perennial of narrow strap-like leaves, compressed into flat fans, forming spreading patches to about 24 to 28 inches tall by 2 to 4 feet wide. Flowers and fruit appear over summer, the star-shaped flowers vary in color between light and dark blue followed by attractive translucent purple-cobalt fruit which releases an indigo stain when squeezed.

Plant in full sun in a well-drained soil with regular to occasional irrigation. Hardy to 20-25° F and long-lived once established. A nice plant for use in rock gardens or as a specimen container plant and makes an impressive mass display plant.

Dianella caerulea is found growing wild across the eastern states of Australia and Tasmania. The genus is named after Diana, the Roman goddess, of hunting and Queen of the woods and the specific epithet means "blued" or "blue-tinged" in reference to the flower color. Dianella caerulea is a highly variable species and this gray form is a wonderful selection that we received from Jo O'Connell of Australian Native Plant Nursery in Casitas Springs, California and we grew it from 2005 until 2009.

The information about Dianella caerulea 'Casitas Springs' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant.
