Setaria palmifolia var. rubra (Red Palm Grass) - Large coarse evergreen grass to 3 feet tall with an equal spread. The long broad pleated leaves have red central veins and stems, which are dark and lack the coarse hair of the green Setaria palmifolia. In late fall cooler temperatures turns older foliage red as well. We have not seen this plant flower as yet but expect that it may be similar to that of the species which has small greenish flowers on tall wands that rise above the foliage. Plant in full sun to light shade. May prove drought resistant like the species but seems to look best with summer irrigation. Looks great along the side of a pond. This plant was smaller, more tender and considerably weaker than the green form of Setaria palmifolia - we only produced it for one year in 2007 before determining that it was not sustainable in the landscape.
The information about Setaria palmifolia var. rubra displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
