Canna 'Black Knight' - This tuberous perennial is a very bold plant in the garden. It grows to 4-6 feet tall with striking large maroon colored leaves and rich red flowers in summer-fall. Plant in full sun and irrigate moderately. Hardy to 0 degrees F. Cannas became very popular in Victorian times with thousands of named cultivars named since. The breeding of the hybrids is complex and so they are broken into artificial groups with names such as the Foliage Group, the Crozy Group (also called the Gladiolus flowering cannas), the Italian Group (also called the Orchid flowering cannas), the Australian Group (from crossing plants of the Foliage Group with those of the Italian Group), the Premier Group (triploids and crosses with the Italian Group), the Variegated Foliage Group, the Conservatory Group, the Aquatic Group, the Miniature Group, the Agriculture Group (for rhizomes with high starch yield) and the Musaefolia Group (banana foliage). 'Black Knight is considered to belong with the Italian Group. The name for the genus is from the Latin word 'cannae' that came from the Greek word 'kanne' meaning "a reed" or "cane". This beautiful and popular canna was reportedly introduced by S. Percy Lancaster of Alipore Cannas of Calcutta India but been prior to 1966 but others list it as a synonym for the variety 'Assaut' which was introduced in 1920 by the French seed and plant breeding company Vimorin-Andrieux that was formed by Claude Geoffroy and her husband Pierre Andrieux. This cultivar also possibly went by the name 'Vorwärts', meaning forward in German and a name used to identify the Social Democratic Party of Germany in the late 19th century.
