Agave chrysoglossa - A very attractive plant from the arid coastal region of Sonora , Mexico. It grows to 2 feet tall and 3 feet across with sword-like pale yellow-green leaves with dark margins near the base. The golden-yellow flowers are produced in tall unbranched spikes. Plant in full sun. Hardy to 25F . It forms a very similar flower to the Octopus Agave (Agave vilmoriniana) and the leaves are also similar in width and coloration but A. chrysoglossa has much straighter and stiffer leaves. A. chrysoglossa also does not produce the bulbils that enables Octopus Agave to reproduce so rapidly, nor does it offset, so this plant needs to be grown from seed. The specific epithet 'chrysoglossa' means "golden tongue" in reference to the golden-yellow flowers.
The information about Agave chrysoglossa displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
