Salvia Ecuador (Ecuadorian Sage) - An upright growing sage to 6 feet or more with large dark green ovate leaves and fuzzy magenta flowers though most of the year.

We have little information and experience with this plant other than observations of it growing in a garden in a frost-free Santa Barbara. In this garden it is growing tall in a shaded location but likely it will take full sun or shade and would be more compact in brighter light. Give occasional irrigation. Hardiness is unknown.

This plant collected in 2014 by Jeff Chemnick at around 9000 feet near a birding lodge several hours east of Quito along a ridge dividing the dry, sparse vegetation of the central cordillera from wet and cloud forests the along the eastern Andean slope. Thinking this maybe Salvia tortuosa but not sure. We sold this plant from 2015 to 2017.

The information about Salvia 'Ecuador' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant.
