x Mangave 'Silver Fox' PP29,642 (Silver Fox Mangave) - A stunning frosty silver-gray colored succulent plant that starts of as a solitary very symmetrical looking rosettes up to 1 foot tall by almost 2 feet wide and with time it pups out to form a cluster of rosettes. The broad at the base arching recurved leaves are a light green color that are covered with a thick waxy coating that gives them a seemingly glowing silver-gray coloration with light blue purple spotting beneath. Enhancing the attraction are the prominent shallowly serrated leaf margins with hard rubbery teeth. When mature 'Silver Fox' sends up a 6 to 8 foot tall stalk, bare at the base with foot long secondary branches in the top half bearing bright yellow flowers. The flowering rosette withers away but it soon replaced by several new ones from its base that creates a cluster of plants - a litter of 'Silver Fox' kits as it were.
Plant in full to half day sun in a well-drained soil and give occasional to regular irrigation. It is cold hardy to around 23° F and suitable to USDA Zones 9,10 and 11 and has been noted to be resistant to deer and rabbit predation. This is a very attractive plant whose silver glaucus leaves glow to nearly white, reminiscent of the look of the flash of white fur seen on the North American Silver Fox (Vulpes vulpes). Mangave 'Silver Fox' is a 2018 introduction in the Walters Gardens MAD ABOUT MANGAVEŽ Collection of plants ans is a hybrid created by Hans Hansen at Walters Gardens in Zeeland Michigan that was the result of crossing Manfreda 'Bloodspot with A. pablocarrilloi (AKA Agave gypsophila, Hort.) in December 2011 and it received U.S. Plant Patetnt PP29,642 in September 2018.
We first received Mangave 'Silver Fox' for trial in January 2018 and put up our first crops for sale in May 2019. Walters Gardens says of this plant " In addition to its wonderful color, 'Silver Fox' has a magnificent habit, with thick, arching leaves and defined marginal teeth."
