Grevillea 'Long John' - An upright rounded shrub to 10+ feet tall (have seen one at 15 feet!) by 8 to 12 feet wide with thin, long, somewhat soft, needle-like leaves along vertical branches . Large, dark rose-pink and orange flower clusters form on the ends of branches.
Plant in full sun in a well-drained soil. Hardy to the mid 20° F. This is a beautiful large shrub for the back of the border where it can tower over other plants or used isolated as a showy specimen. Tip prune to keep dense.
The genus name Grevillea honors Charles Francis Greville (1749-1809), a patron of botany, a very close friend of Sir Joseph Banks, and president of the Royal Society of London. The name 'Long John' comes from a combination of the names of the two parent species, Grevillea longistyla and G. johnsonii, that were involved in this hybrid. We received this plant from Rosendale Nursery in Watsonville in 1992 and have been growing it ever since but it has been a bit difficult to propagate so we usually only have limited quantities.
