Grevillea 'Winpara Gem' - A large shrub to 8 feet + tall and wide with soft, silvery gray-green fern-like leaves and small deep coral red flowers in compact clusters that are displayed at the branch tips in fall and winter. The new growth is attractively covered with coppery-brown hairs.
Plant in full sun to part shade and water sparingly, if at all as it has proven to be tolerant of very dry conditions and this also can slow its rapid growth and keep it more compact. I has proven frost hardy to 25° F.
Grevillea 'Winpara Gem' arose as a spontaneous seedling garden hybrid on a property called "Winpara" at Jervois, South Australia in 1981 and was submitted to the Australian Cultivar Registration Authority by Mrs K Bartlett in 1984. It was an open pollinated seedling of G. thelemanniana and suspected of being a cross with either Grevillea argyrophylla or Grevillea olivacea.. It is noted as most resembling the G. thelemanniana but with leaves not as much divided and with shorter flower racemes. We grew this plant at SMG from 1994 until 2004 and really only decided to stop growing it because it got too large.
The information about Grevillea 'Winpara Gem' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
