Heliconia schiedeana (Lobster Claw/ Parrot's Beak) - This herbaceous plant produces 6-8 foot long stalks with elongated leaf blades (3'x1'). In spring arise the tall flower stalks, often above the foliage, of showy long red bracts that are a good foil below the yellow flowers. It does best in a sheltered, lightly-shaded location with fairly moist soil. Hardy to at least 30 degrees F though may not flower in areas that get frost. For many years we sold this plant as Heliconia latispatha. We had this plant in production since 1988 until 2008 when we discontinued growing it.
The information about Heliconia schiedeana displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
