Centranthus ruber (Red Valerian) - A very versatile perennial with bluish-green foliage that grows to 3 feet tall by as wide. Rounded spikes of small reddish-pink flowers are borne from late spring to early summer. Can grow in many different garden conditions: sun to shade, little to occasional water, and poor to loamy soil. Good on banks, in wall crevices and the fringe of the garden. Can be invasive if not monitored. Remove spent flowers to promote extended bloom and avoid proliferation of young seedlings. Some people love its ability to regenerate and spread - others hate it. Hardy to about 15-20 degrees F. We grew this for many years but din 2012 decided to no longer offer it.
This information about Centranthus ruber displayed is based on research conducted in our horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also will relate observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments that we receive from others and we welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share any cultural information that would aid others in growing it.
