Crowea exalata 'Ryans Star' - A compact shrub to 18 to 24" tall by 24 to 36" wide with aromatic narrow 1 inch dark green leaves and bearing waxy star shaped pink flowers year round. Plant in full coastal sun where base is shaded to keep soil cooler or in dappled shade in a well-drained soil and give infrequent to regular irrigation - once established can take extended dry periods but will need some irrigation in summer months. It is tolerant of beach side conditions with some protection. Should be hardy to at least 22° F. A nice decorative small plant for an accent or for container gardening. Trim in later winter to maintain a dense plant. We received this plant as part of the UC Santa Cruz Koala Blooms Australian Plant Introduction Program and though we have not had great luck keeping other Crowea exalata cultivars long in Southern California gardens, this one has definitely impressed us with its non-stop blooming. This species is native to northern and eastern Victoria and the south coast of New South Wales. The genus Crowea is named after James Crowe, an English botanist and the specific epithet means "without wings" in reference to the lack of ridges on the stems, though this is not considered to be a definitive characteristic.

This information about Crowea exalata 'Ryans Star' displayed is based on research conducted in our horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also will relate observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments that we receive from others and we welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share any cultural information that would aid others in growing it.
