Salvia puberula 'El Butano' - This shrub-like perennial to 3 to 5 feet tall has bright magenta blooms in fall until the first frost.
This plant likes moist soils and at least a half day of sun. Is cold hardy to 20-25° F. Due to its tendency to lean, interplant S. puberula with other shrubs for support and accent.
Salvia puberula 'El Butano' was collected by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld of Yucca Do at around 7,000 feet in elevation in El Butano, a species rich area near Cumbres de Monterrey National Park in the mountains of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. We received first this interesting plant from the Salvia aficionado Richard Drufresne and grew it from 2000 until 2006.
The information about Salvia puberula 'El Butano' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
