Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Tricolor' (Tricolor Star Jasmine) - A new cultivar of the popular Star Jasmine with new growth that is pink turning to cream splashed on green. As with the species, white flowers form in hanging clusters on outside branches during the summer and are strongly perfumed.
The species is best planted in full sun or part shade in soil with decent drainage and give occasional to infrequent summer watering - pretty drought tolerant along the coast but looks better with occasional irrigation. Heat tolerant in inland valleys and frost hardy to around 10° F though leaves have a tendency to turn bronzy in the winter with temperatures below freezing.
We received this cultivar from Terra Nova Nurseries as Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Goshiki Kazura' but is more often seen as 'Tricolor', the name recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society. After all the rave reviews we got on this plant we are sorry now to have to say "What a dog of a plant". It is slow growing and rarely colorful in our climate. We only offered it from 2004 and 2005 and sold a total of 18 plants - wonder if they are still around somewhere?
The information about Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Tricolor' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
