Leptospermum scoparium 'Helene Strybing' (New Zealand Tea Tree) - This evergreen shrub has an open, upright and arching growth habit (to 10 feet tall with equal spread) with larger flowers than other L. scopariums. Flowers are single, deep pink with a dark center and appear in a very strong flush in the spring as well as in the fall. It has tiny needle-like green leaves sometimes tinged with pink (especially during cold temperatures). It requires good drainage, is drought tolerant, and is hardy down to about 20 degrees F. We grew this plant from 1980 until 2007 - still one of the best but many other nurseries grow and popularity on all of the tea trees has somewhat diminished.
The information about Leptospermum scoparium 'Helene Strybing' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
