Echinacea purpurea 'Doppelganger' (Double Purple Coneflower) - Deciduous perennial to 30 inches tall with dark rosy-pink flowers to 5 inches across with orange-yellow disks slightly elongated into an orange-brown cone. From the top of the cone emerge small petals, perched to create a layered effect. These petals distinguish this cultivar and gives it the name "Doppelganger", referring to the shadow self. This curious flower, looking like a tutu is more evident once the plant has been established and is in the second year of growth. As with other cornflowers, this plant makes an outstanding cut flower and a great addition to the mixed border. Plant in full sun to light shade with average garden watering. Very frost hardy (to USDA zone 3). The species is native to the prairies of the central U.S. Introduced by Alice Doyle of Log House Plants in Oregon who found this plant growing in Germany.
