Mentha x piperita (Aquatic) (Curly Mint) - A very ornamental trailing mint plant with bright green leaves that are crinkled and has tiny pale lavender flowers held in tight clusters that rise in upright spikes above the foliage. The leaves are strongly aromatic when crushed. Plant in full sun to light shade in moist soil or at the waters edge. Prune frequently to encourage bushy growth. Hardy to USDA Zone 5 (<10° F) A very good plant in a container. Leaves can be used in teas and jellies. This plant is sometimes listed as Mentha aquatica var. crispa or Mentha spicata var. crispa but is likely a hybrid between Mentha aquatica and M. spicata. The name Mentha is from the name of a Greek nymph named Mentha who was turned into a mint plant.
The information about Mentha x piperita displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
