Archontophoenix cunninghamiana (King Palm) - The King palm is said to have a "crown" which is the smooth green to purplish-brown portion of the trunk that starts 3 feet below the leaves. This solitary trunk palm grows to 60 feet tall and displays arching feather leaves. The pinkish flowers are clustered on pendulous inflorescences which grow from the base of the crownshaft. Will grow in full sun to part shade with occasional summer watering. It stabilizes soil erosion and is wind tolerant. Hardy to 28°F. We sold this great plant at our nursery since 1979 but reluctantly discontinued growing it in 2007 as we focused on more xerophytic plants.
The information about Archontophoenix cunninghamiana displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
