Saxifraga stolonifera 'Maroon Beauty' (Strawberry Begonia) - Lovely, large evergreen maroon marked leaves spread by red runners (stolons). Each leaf edge is slightly scalloped . There are veins on the leaves which are lined with white, while the backsides of the leaves are pink. Clusters of white flowers bloom on 16 inch tall stalks from late spring and into summer. Plant in part to full shade, with regular watering. Also known as Mother of Thousands, this plant is a good choice for shade, and complements ferns, bromeliads and mosses and works well in hanging baskets as well. We have had some disease issues with this plant in production and discontinued growing it in 2010.
The information about Saxifraga stolonifera 'Maroon Beauty' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
