Ruttyruspolia 'Phyllis Van Heerden' - A compact low-growing shrub to 3 to 4 feet feet tall, more with support, with small dark green pointed leaves and clusters of dusky-rose colored flowers at the branch tips from spring through fall. Plant in part sun to light shade and give regular irrigation. Cold hardy down to at least 28F and some say will take temperatures below 15 °F. This plant is a naturally occurring sterile intergeneric hybrid between two African (Zimbabwe) species in the Acanthus family, Ruspolia hypocrateriformis and Ruttya ovata. Ruttya has a prominently 2-lipped corolla with a short broad tube while Ruspolia has a 5-lobed corolla with a narrowly tube - the wild and garden hybrids have more of the characteristics of Ruspolia. We thank Margies Tyre of Entyrely Awesome Plants for this plant which we have been grown since 2005.
