Myrsine africana 'Scarlett Marglin' (Variegated African Boxwood) - This is a variegated sport off of African Boxwood, a tough slow growing evergreen shrub. The dark green ½ long rounded leaves have a cream variegation that is infused with pink. Plant in sun or part shade. It is drought tolerant and hardy to about 20 degrees F. We still have to wait to learn about the overall height of this slow growing plant but presumably it will get nearly as tall as the unvariegated form, which can grow to 8 feet tall but is usually seen between 6 and 8 feet tall and can be kept even lower by an occasional pruning. We purchased this plant from Heronswood Nursery in Kingston, Washington in October 2005. They noted that this plant came from Scarlett, aka Susie Marglin who noted this vegetative sport in her Medina, Washington garden.
The information about Myrsine africana 'Scarlett Marglin' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
