Agave desmetiana 'Variegata' (Variegated Smooth Agave) - This is a medium sized upright agave that forms an upright urn-shaped rosette with 3 foot long by 4-inch-wide leaves terminating in sharp reddish-brown spines. The leaves are bright green with yellow variegation along the margins. Spines are minute or nonexistent along the margins. It is quick growing and often produces many offsets.

Plant in full sun and irrigate infrequently. Agave desmetiana plants are drought tolerant and cold hardy to around 25° F and a little lower for short durations - we have heard from a grower in Austin, Texas who noted that they had leaf damage after 2 nights with temperatures down to 25° F on for several hours.

For more information about this species and its current nomenclatures see our listing for Agave desmetiana. This variegated cultivar has long been grown in the US but is called Agave 'Golden Moments' in Australia. Our plants are from bulbils off a plant that bloomed in our nursery in 2004 - there is some variability in the variegation on these plant but they were all nice looking plants that we sold between 2005 and 2015. We continue to grow selected cultivars that are either this species or hybrids with it called 'Joe Hoak' (no joke!) and 'Galactic Traveller'.

The information about Agave desmetiana 'Variegata' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant.
