A charming small perennial that grows into a small clump with tight heads of pink flowers rising on slender stalks to 18 inches tall in late spring and summer. Plant in full sun in a well-drained soil and irrigate occasionally to regularly. This plant was grown from seed originally collected at the Getty Villa in Santa Monica, California by Santa Barbara Botanic Garden horticulturist Carol Bornstein. The Getty staff did not have a record of the plant so we are listing it with their permission as "Getty Villa". With its narrow foliage it is likely a selection of Scabiosa columbaria, which is a small perennial with gray-green hairy leaves; basal leaves being lance shaped and stem leaves dissected or finely divided. The flower heads are composed of numerous tiny flowers. This species is from the Mediterranean region of Europe, North Africa and western Asia where it grows in dry, sunny grasslands, rocky hillsides and open woods. A very pretty plant but apparently was an annual plant and we discontinued growing it after growing it for one season.
This information about Scabiosa 'Getty Villa' displayed is based on research conducted in our horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also will relate observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments that we receive from others and we welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share any cultural information that would aid others in growing it.
