Selliera radicans (Swamp-mat) - This prostrate evergreen woody stemmed plant forms a dense groundcover with 1 inch long spoon shaped fleshy leaves that are dark green on the upper surface and silver gray on the underside. It has small 1/4 inch wide fan flowers, similar to the related Scaevola, that arise individually from the prostrate stems to above the foliage in mid summer. The flowers appear white as they face up from the ground but the lower surface hidden from view and the center of the flower are a reddish color. Plant in coastal full sun to light shade or morning sun in hotter areas. Water regularly without allowing to dry out. Good in permanently wet conditions and along the pond margin - tolerates brackish water and coastal conditions. Hardy to around 15° F. This tight little plant is native to salt marshes and wet areas near lakes and streams. It has an interesting disjunct distribution, growing naturally in Chile, Australia and New Zealand.
