Sinobambusa tootsik 'Albostriata' (Variegated Chinese Temple Bamboo) - An aggressive temperate running bamboo with tufted clusters of yellowish-white striped leaves on straight slender erect culms to 15 to 20 feet tall with 1 inch wide culms typical in cultivation, though the species is noted as reaching 30 feet in habitat.
Plant in full sun only in cooler coastal gardens but looks best with part sun to light shade. Irrigate occasionally to regularly - reportedly resents cold dry soils but is hardy to as low as 10°F. A great bamboo for containers - if planted in the garden it likely should be constrained by some form of a rhizome barrier.
Sinobambusa tootsik 'Albostriata' was found in Kobe Japan in the 1950's and was imported into the U.S. by the American Bamboo Society in 1984. The name for the genus combines the compound words 'Sino' meaning "China" with 'bambusa' meaning bamboo and the specific epithet is the common name of this bamboo in Japan'
We first saw mature plants growing in the garden of artist and horticulturist Marcia Donahue and got our plants from Bamboo Headquarters and grew it from 2010 until 2014.
