Crassula macowaniana - A small upright rounded shrub to 2 feet tall with fat fleshy 1 to 2 inch long leaves that are lanceolate in profile and flat on the upper surface but deeply convex below and curved upwards to a an acute tip and are a pale green color with a white, waxy cuticle speckled with fine glandular green spots and a fine red colored margin. In summer it has rounded thyrses of white flowers with a tinge of pink that is both showy and attracts various insects. Plant in full sun in a well-drained soil with little irrigation required. Hardiness of this plant is not well known but it has been in cultivation outdoors in areas that experience short duration light freezes and so we cautiously list it hardy to 30° F until we get better information about this. Should prove to be a nice plant in the succulent or rock garden or kept in a container. This is a selected upright clone of Crassula macowaniana but the species in nature is quite variable in form, with some plants being upright shrubs and others prostrate groundcovers. It is widespread from the southwestern Namibia south through Namaqualand to Clanwilliam in the northwestern Cape region where it found in mountainous areas growing among boulders or on rocky slopes. The genus Crassula was a name Linnaean name first used in 1753 and comes from the Latin word 'crassus' meaning "thick" that refers to the thick plump leaves of many of the genus. The specific epithet honors British born South African botanist Peter Macowan (1830-1909) who was curator of the Cape Town Botanic Gardens and herbarium. This clone was first distributed in 2018 by the Huntington Botanic Gardens in their International Succulent Introduction program as ISI 2018-15.
