Phormium 'Dark Delight Seedling' (New Zealand Flax) - New Zealand Flax cultivar that grows to 4 feet tall with slightly arching 1-2 inch wide leaves that are a dark reddish brown. Flowers reliably in late spring to early summer with red flowers on upright stems to 5-6 feet tall. Plant in full sun to light shade. Can tolerate fairly dry conditions (coastal) but looks best with occasional to regular irrigation. Hardy to 15-20 F. Possibly root hardy below these temperatures but with severe foliage damage unless protected. We propagate this plant from seed collected from a stand of Phormium 'Dark Delight'. The seedlings are uniformly dark and appear very similar if not identical to the parent plant. As with 'Dark Delight' these plants are among the darkest of flax hybrids.
The information about Phormium 'Dark Delight Seedling' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
