Phormium 'Amazing Red' (New Zealand Flax) - New Zealand Flax cultivar with narrow dark, reddish-brown leaves that grows to only 18-24 inches tall. Can tolerate fairly dry conditions (coastal) but looks best with occasional to regular irrigatation. Hardy to 15-20 F. Possibly root hardy below these temperatures but with severe foliage damage unless protected. Looks quite a bit like 'Monrovia Red' but the habit is more rigidly upright and the leaves are narrower and shorter. A good container plant that combines well with fine textured gray plants. A fairly new cultivar from a South African nursery. We found this plant not so amazing and discontinued growing it in 2003.
The information about Phormium 'Amazing Red' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
