Reinwardtia indica (Yellow flax) - This winter-flowering shrub grows to 3 feet tall with bright green, oval leaves and bears sprays of wide, funnel-shaped, golden-yellow flowers from November to February. Each flower lasts only one day but new flowers replace older ones continuously. Plant is full sun to light shade and irrigate regularly - likes moist soil. Hardy to 25-30° F. This old garden favorite from China and India is useful for its cheery bright yellow flowers in the middle of winter. The genus name honors Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt (1773-1854), a Prussian-born Dutch botanist.
The information about Reinwardtia indica displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
