Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum 'Purple Majesty' (Red Fringe Flower) - Rounded, evergreen shrub with graceful, arching branches to 6 to 8 feet tall. Can be used in a variety of ways - in mass plantings as a hedge, as a specimen tree or as a patio tree. Bright fuchsia fringe flowers appear in masses in spring and then throughout the year. New growth is a dark burgundy, ultimately maturing to a brilliant purple. Best in full sun or part shade with occasional watering. Hardy to 15-20° F. The white flowering natural form (Loropetalum chinense var. chinense) is noted as coming from the wilds of China, India and Japan but Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum was first described from material of garden origin and has been widely cultivated in southern China. For more information on cultivation and the species, see our listing of the white flowering Loropetalum chinense. We have grown this nice dark selection since 1999 and is very similar to Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum 'Hines Purple Leaf', but perhaps has slightly darker leaves.
The information about Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum 'Purple Majesty' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
